You may or may not be aware of Russia’s new anti-gay laws (anti-propaganda for nontraditional sexual relationships, as it is worded) and you may or may not be aware that the 2014 Winter Games will be taking place in Russia. There is a growing awareness of both of these facts around the country and around the globe that is setting up a bit of a collision course. Some are calling for a USOC boycott of the games, which would be the second time the U.S. kept their athletes home from a Russian Olympiad. That’s almost certainly not actually going to happen but it would be a strong statement. The IOC has said they will support gay athletes at the games in spite of the law but nobody seems to know what that means. There has been some chatter that the law won’t be enforced for Olympics visitors but, hello there Vitaly Milonov!, there is no intention perceived or stated from the Russian government to that effect.
