PLAYERS: Andrew Simpson
Tragedy struck during training for the America’s Cup on Thursday, as British sailor Andrew Simpson died when the boat he was on capsized in the San Francisco Bay. Simpson, a two-time Olympic medalist, was one of 11 crew members on board Artemis Racing’s 72-foot catamaran. He was trapped under the boat after it overturned. Doctors attempted to revive him both in the water and then on shore, but they were unsuccessful. “The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened,” Artemis Racing CEO Paul Cayard said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.” Simpson won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. According to the Artemis Racing website, all other crew members were accounted for.
