In a lower league soccer match from Brazil this past Wednesday, Iranduba midfielder Volante Derlan was arrested on the pitch after attacking a referee who had just shown him a red card.
It happened in the first half of the match against Sao Raimundo-AM after referee Joao Batista Cunha Brito pulled the red card out of his pocket to send Derlan out of the game. Derlan reacted like a bull being shown the red cape by a bullfighter and immediately charged Brito and threw a few punches at his head. Fortunately one of the other referees and some of Derlan's teammates were able to intervene, and police were on hand to arrest Derlan on the spot.
Iranduba won the match 2-1, and they will have to get used to playing without Derlan, who has been suspended for a minimum of 30 days. After a review, Derlan's suspension could be extended to 2 years, which would certainly give him plenty of time to deal with his anger management issues.
