In what came as a complete shock to the soccer world on Friday afternoon, reports have surfaced that the Seattle Sounders are close to acquiring United States national team captain Clint Dempsey from Tottenham Hotspur. Doug McIntyre of ESPN is reporting that the two sides are finalizing the transfer as I write this, and Dempsey is expected to be introduced as a Sounder as early as Saturday. Two Sounders officials declined to comment on the transfer specifically but one told ESPN he was not surprised to be receiving a call from someone on that topic. The 30-year-old forward/midfielder joined Tottenham last summer and in 43 total appearances for the club he scored 12 goals. In 29 Barclays Premier League appearances he tallied seven goals. He moved to Tottenham after being a mainstay with Fulham for six seasons, developing into a fan favorite during his tenure there. Dempsey has previously played in Major League Soccer, as he spent the first three years of his professional career with the New England Revolution. This move would certainly be a blockbuster for the Sounders, who would pair Dempsey with fellow U.S. national teamer Eddie Johnson to form a potent scoring duo. This would have to make Seattle one of the favorites in Major League Soccer immediately. One has to wonder whether Dempsey is simply planning a short stay back in America before transferring to another European squad. Clearly something didn’t work out at Tottenham as he and the club seem to think it’s time to move on.
