Days ago, former England captain David Beckham was training with Arsenal. Now, he’s swapped the life he knows best for the French capital, Paris. Just before Christmas 2012, Beckham ended his 5 and-a-half year spell with Los Angeles Galaxy and has since been a free agent. With the usual hype around the January Transfer Deadline Day this move has been perhaps one of the biggest and most spoken about transfers. Nonetheless, a lucrative deal for the current League 1 leaders and attracting such a household name in world football will certainly please the bank of the PSG President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi. The deal keeps Beckham at Paris Saint-Germain for five months. ‘Becks’ has had a career to savour, after starting off as one of the ‘boys’ at Manchester United along with now club legends such as Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville to name but a few. He was unknown when he made his first-team debut for United in 1992 when he came on from the bench in a League Cup tie against Brighton and Hove Albion. He made his first impact on world football when he made his UEFA Champions League debut in which he scored in United’s comfortable 4-0 win over Galatasaray. He then went on to play a magnificent 265 games for the Red Devils, scoring 62 goals in the process. In 2003, Beckham made the short trip to Spain to sign for the giants. No, not Barcelona… Read Madrid. For €35 million. Since then, he has enjoyed much success with A.C Milan and Los Angeles Galaxy. He also had a fantastic international career, where he was the captain and inspirational spearhead of Peter Taylor’s and Sven-Göran Eriksson’s England side. He will always be remembered for the kick on Argentine Diego Simone, which Beckham stated made him a stronger player, but also a stronger character. The former Premier League title holder Beckham said on the move, “I’m excited; it’s something we’ve been working on and talking about for quite a while. How much can I give? I’ve a lot of experience. I’ve won trophies throughout my career and played with the biggest and best clubs. I won’t receive any salary. My salary will go to a local children’s charity in Paris. It’s something that I don’t think has been done before.” Time will tell if the 38 year old will adapt to the ever changing demands of the French top-flight, but it will be interesting to see where he’ll fit into the star-studded line-up of PSG with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Javier Pastore, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Thiago Silva. I will be watching with the utmost interest and I’m sure he will make a big impact on PSG’s hunt to become Ligue 1 champions after just missing out last season. I’m sure he’ll score some goals and put in some top performances, creating plenty of goal scoring opportunities through is creditable hard work and desire to do well. It’s a shame that he hasn’t returned to the Premier League, but I’m sure he will be followed closely by the British media.   Written by Adam May Follow him on Twitter @Amay132 Please like O-Posts on Facebook You can follow O-Posts on Twitter @OPosts
