When the decisive moment came, Roy Hodgson surprised everybody. Last week, as England prepared for vital World Cup qualifying games against Montenegro and Poland, he noted that it was important not to "go too gung-ho" - why, after all, change the habit of a lifetime? The criticism of Hodgson, from English fans at least and Liverpool fans in particular, has always been that he is too cautious, that he has the mentality of a manager of a mid-table club, forever looking to grind out points against better teams. Away to Ukraine last month, he crafted an almost impeccable defensive display, stifling opponents that had scored 18 goals in its previous four games. And then, when the crunch came, to everybody's surprise, he released the shackles. Against Montenegro, it had been half-expected. After all, Montenegro, gallantly as it has performed over the past few years, is essentially a minor and, without four or five key players, it always seemed possible England would manage to overwhelm ...
