David Villa who signed with Atlético Madrid earlier this summer will play as a forward for the team to start this year. He will attempt to replace the role of one of the best strikers currently in the game, Radamel Falcao who has transferred to AS Monaco. After meeting with Manager Diego Simeone, Villa said it was clear that he wanted to stay in La Liga and play for Atletí. He added that he would work hard in the offseason to get prepared to play at the top of his game.
Villa has a long history playing in La Liga and had his debut playing for Sporting de Gijón. He later played for Real Zaragoza and Valencia before playing for Barcelona from 2010 until 2013. He had a number of injuries at Barcelona but nothing a squad which has a number of star young players.
Barcelona have signed the Brazilian superstar Neymar and have no lack of talent in their wingers and strikers this season. It seems Barcelona negotiated a transfer simply because they had less use for Villa than they did in previous years. They reached an agreement with Atlético to allow him to transfer for €5.1 million.
It seems that Villa will be a perfect fit for Atletí’s challenge to replace Falcao. Villa is a winger who can also play as a striker has a good deal of creativity with the ball. He is great at crossing as well as scoring from close range.
Depending on how the new squad plays together they might even have a chance at winning the Supercopa de España this season. It seems unlikely, however that they will be able to compete for La Liga title seeing that they would have to beat out Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The Atletí squad is seeing a lot of changes this year, perhaps one of the biggest being having David Villa upfront. Only time will tell if Simeone will be able to hold the team together and get them to again be in the top 3 in La Liga again this season.
