Kylian Mbappe makes history with stunning showing in Kazakhstan

Kylian Mbappe delivered another reminder of his place among soccer’s elite, scoring a hat trick as Real Madrid eased to a 5-0 victory over Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

It was far from a routine group stage win. The night highlighted both Mbappe’s individual brilliance and the gulf in class between the two sides, with Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz adding late goals to seal a dominant Madrid display.

Mbappe’s treble was his fourth in the Champions League, moving him level with compatriot Karim Benzema and trailing only Robert Lewandowski (six), Cristiano Ronaldo (eight) and Lionel Messi (eight) on the all-time list.

Remarkably, three of Mbappe's four hat-tricks have come away from home, equaling Filippo Inzaghi’s record for most Champions League hat-tricks on the road, further proof of his ability to deliver in the toughest and most hostile environments.

Multiple records broken in Kazakhstan

The history-making did not end there. Thibaut Courtois registered an assist for Mbappe, becoming just the eighth goalkeeper in the past decade to create a goal in the Champions League.

Courtois is also the only keeper to have done it twice, and for two different clubs, having previously set up a goal for Chelsea against Qarabag in 2017.

For Kairat, the game marked a less celebrated milestone. According to Transfermarkt, it represented the biggest squad-value mismatch in Champions League history. Madrid’s squad is valued at around €1.38 billion ($1.62B) more than the Kazakh side’s, which is a record gap in the competition.

Previous examples of such disparity had all involved Manchester City, including fixtures against Slovan Bratislava, Young Boys and Red Star Belgrade.

That gulf was evident on the pitch. Madrid’s dominance was clear from the outset, Mbappe leading the line ruthlessly as Xabi Alonso’s side ensured there would be no repeat of their 5-2 defeat at the hands of rivals Atletico Madrid this past weekend.

Ultimately, the night will be remembered as one of the Champions League’s most lopsided encounters, and as another step in Mbappe’s ascent toward the competition’s all-time greats.

With four Champions League hat-tricks already to his name, and still just 26, the Frenchman continues to write his own history on Europe’s biggest stage.
