The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team hit its stride a year and a day before the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil. The Americans defeated Panama by a score of 2-0 in front of a raucous crowd in Seattle, Wash., thanks to goals from Jozy Altidore and Eddie Johnson. The resurgent forwards were among those players who came up big, as the U.S. delivered its most complete, effective and entertaining performance of the entire 2014 World Cup qualifying cycle. The victory put the U.S. top the CONCACAF hexagonal standings midway through the final round of World Cup qualifying. A few things of note stood out from Tuesday’s game: Michael Bradley‘s drive and Geoff Cameron‘s athleticism redefined U.S. midfield play. The two center midfielders brought out the best in each other. Bradley, a ball-loving, tempo-dictating type of midfielder, was unleashed by Cameron’s presence. His driving run and pass to Fabian Johnson helped create Altidore’s goal in the first half. It was one of many...

Jozy Altidore's silence speaks volumes

Jozy Altidore isn't talking right now. But then the things he's saying are speaking volumes. Since coming into United States men's national team camp in late May on the back of a breakout season in the Netherlands - scoring 31 goals in all competitions with Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar , a new American overseas single-season scoring record - Altidore hasn't talked...

What’s Next for the US Men’s National Team?

My how things have changed.  The United State Mens National Team began the year a bit on the ropes.  The team had an up and down type 2012 and were eager to begin the final stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.  Ten matches with up to thirty points up for the taking.  Of the six teams left in the hexagon shaped tournament, three qualify outright while the fourth will take on...

Jozy Altidore continued his scoring blitz with a goal in his third straight match, Eddie Johnson thrilled his home club fans with a goal in the 53rd minute, and the United States took over first place in its World Cup qualifying group with a 2-0 win over Panama on Tuesday. Altidore scored in the 36th minute on a perfect cross from Fabian Johnson, moments after a potential penalty...

The World Cup qualifying roller coaster

A mere three months ago, Jurgen Klinsmann was a man who reportedly had lost control of the U.S. national soccer team, leading many to call for his head. An ugly come-from-ahead away loss to Honduras in the Americans' opener in the fourth and final round of World Cup qualifying followed a long string of lackluster performances. If Klinsmann's predecessor, Bob Bradley, had...

US makes 2 changes in lineup vs. Panama

U.S. soccer coach Jurgen Klinsmann has made two changes to his lineup Tuesday night against Panama, inserting Eddie Johnson and Geoff Cameron into the starting lineup. The changes were necessitated by a concussion suffered by Jermaine Jones against Jamaica and a yellow card suspension to Graham Zusi and changed the U.S. to a 4-2-3-1 allignment. Tim Howard started in goal with the...

It was just, I think, a wonderful...

The United States Men’s National Team shut out Panama for a 2-0 win in front of an electric crowd in Seattle on Tuesday. The Yanks outclassed Panama for much of the 90 minutes, earning 3 points and bringing the US to the top of the standings at the midway point of the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying. The United States and Honduras both took strides toward World Cup qualification with victories on Tuesday while Mexico's ambitions remain in the balance after being held by Costa Rica. The U.S. won 2-0 at home against Panama to move to the top of CONCACAF standings with 10 points from five games. Costa Rica (from five games) and Mexico (from six) are both on eight points to...

100 Years of History – Our Time Starts Now

brent flanders flickr page As the stadium in Seattle, chanted “We’re going to Brazil” it begs to question whether this US National Soccer Team has what it takes to make history for the ages.  The US has undoubtedly been scrutinized in the past, for their lack of success, questionable talent, highly paid coaching and continuous high expectations, but with their recent 2-0...
