The UAE played Lebanon this past weekend and dominated the game 6-2, however the biggest story which dominated this game was the penalty kick by UAE which netted their sixth goal.

In the 78th minute Awana Diab lined up for a penalty kick with the score 5-2, and that is where the fun started.  Awana did a 180 and took the penalty kick backwards with his heel.  The stunned goalie was too confused to move and the ball hit the back of the net.

  • A classless play by a classless player. Football/soccer is full of these type plays and players. Imagine if this were hockey. Imagining. The player is fine to do something like this but good luck 10 seconds later when the puck drops. The sport governs this type of poor sportsmanlike play. If I were coach I'd pull the player for pulling something like that in a 5-2 game situation since there's not much governing that happens on the field. I'm sure just before this happened the penalty shot player dove, cried like he'd never walk again, and then when penalty kick was given hopped to his feet healthy as can be. Can someone please explain why this sport is popular. All I can see is it's cheap to play thus making it accessible to the masses. Try a real sport like hockey, lacrosse, or even skiing where there's respect between competitors. Swimming, ping pong, tiddly winks, left foot jumping, etc - all sports that have more respect than football/soccer.
  • I agree that this wasn't showing the best sportmanship although it showed skill and stradegy. however as a soccer player, i disagree with the generalization you made. did you watch the womens world cup??? so much respect was shown to one another. and penalty kicks aren't necessarily given to the one who was knocked over! and from experience, you can get knocked over and the pain is excruciating but it can pass after a few minutes. soccer is sooo popular because of the passion players have for it. when i get on that field, all my troubles go away and it feels good. dont criticize a sport you dont understand.
  • I agree it is a classless play especially given the score. However, I will say this, there is zero need for repercussions like you would see in hockey. Actually, as someone who played hockey and soccer most of my life I don't think you would need a Tie Domi or a Marty McSorley to head out and take care of things here. Yes, there is quite a bit of theatrics in this sport and it is easy to jump on it, however it is no better or worse than any other sport that involves teams. Think of the diving that goes on in hockey. The reality is that these teams are among the bottom tier of footballing nations. These are the teams that you see losing to the United States national team by 10 goals (if they chose to turn it on that is). So while I agree in many respects to your train of thought, please remember what goes around comes around, especially in soccer.
  • couldn't agree more :D
  • Rubbish, I hope someone took him out.
  • I don't get it; what did he do wrong? I think it was kinda cute. And it's nice to see players mix things up once in a while.
