Real Madrid are open to selling Manchester United target Federico Valverde

Manchester United’s midfield is under constant debate, and transfer rumours always circle Old Trafford. We reported earlier that Manchester United want Federico Valverde, and fresh updates suggest that possibility is edging closer to reality. Manchester Evening News reports that Real Madrid are now open to selling the Uruguayan international, long admired by United’s recruitment team.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, as relayed by Manchester Evening News, United are ready to pay around £87 million for the 27-year-old, whose versatility allows him to play both in midfield and at right-back. At the Bernabeu, senior figures are increasingly receptive to offers, and manager Xabi Alonso reportedly views Valverde as important but not untouchable.

That stance marks a significant shift, given how reluctant Madrid were to consider bids before. With over 250 appearances for the Spanish giants, the 27-year-old has built a reputation as a tireless runner and a dynamic force in defence and attack. For United, who continue to assess their long-term midfield options, his name carries weight and immediate appeal. We reported earlier that Ruben Amorim is still keen to strengthen one Manchester United spot despite summer investment, and hence, United are still active in the market.

Why Valverde should fit Amorim’s system?

Federico Valverde might turn out to be the player who fixes the weaknesses in Ruben Amorim’s set-up if he survives the United job by them. The 40-year-old prefers midfielders who possess a work ethic along with defensive discipline. His system needs these traits because of his attacking wing-backs and systematic pressing. The Uruguayan will definitely provide what Amorim might want with his high work rate, tackling efficiency, and the sheer ability to cover every blade of grass.

The 27-year-old has mainly played in an attacking role during his stint at Real Madrid, but the stats reveal that Valerde is equally efficient in both facets of the game.  Across the 2024-25 season, he scored 11 goals and provided eight assists, while maintaining a 90 per cent passing accuracy and contributing 52 tackles with an estimated 73 interceptions. In the current campaign, though he has not scored, Valverde has already supplied three assists in just eight matches, while raising his passing success to 91 per cent.

All these numbers point to his ability and adaptability to thrive in any role. If Amorim pairs him with a defensive-minded partner at United, then the club could unleash his pressing and ball-winning qualities while allowing him to break forward. Critics of Amorim argue his tactical system has not always matched the squad’s strengths, but Valverde’s versatility and consistency suggest he could bridge that gap. For a United side crying out for energy and defensive assurance in midfield, he looks like the kind of investment that could bring both structure and flexibility.
