Outgoing Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that star Wayne Rooney has handed in a transfer request due to frustration at being substituted in recent matches. The 27-year-old forward has been with United since 2004 and now wants out, but Ferguson insists the club has no plans to let him go. Rooney didn’t dress for Man U’s 2-1 win over Swansea on Sunday, which happened to be Ferguson’s final home game as manager. The star player watched from an executive box with his family. Ferguson had the following to say about Rooney after the match: “I don’t think Wayne Rooney was keen to play, simply because he’s asked for a transfer. He wants to think it through in his mind, which is a good idea. We are not going to let him go but he is a little bit frustrated at being taken off once or twice in the last few weeks.” Rooney did come down to the field after the match, shook hands with Ferguson and joined in the celebration ceremony for the club’s 13th Premiere League title (and 20th top division championship). Ferguson is retiring after the season and current Everton boss David Moyes will be taking over on July 1. Moyes sold Rooney to United in 2004, and Moyes later sued Rooney after the striker (in his autobiography) alleged Moyes leaked details of a private conversation to the press concerning the reasons for his departure from Everton. Rooney asked for a transfer from United back in 2010, but the two sides were able to instead work out a new contract. He currently has two years left on that deal. In 278 career appearances for Manchester United, Rooney has scored 141 goals. Since his arrival, United has won the Premiere League five times (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2010-11, 2012-13), the Champions League once (2007-08) and the FIFA Club World Cup once (2008). Moyes and Rooney may not have the best relationship but it would be absolutely stunning if United transferred it’s most recognizable player. For non-soccer aficionados, this development would be like Tom Brady demanding a trade from New England Patriots, but after winning another Super Bowl, and if he had at least five good years left.
