Manchester United may have had unsuccessful summer in failing to sign some big names such as Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara but managed to prize away Marouane Fellaini from David Moyes’ former employers, Everton. The 25 year old Belguim international joins Manchester United on a £27.5 million transfer but has brought a lot of criticism upon David Moyes and the Manchester United board as they could have secured his services before the deal had expired on July 31 for £23.5 million. He stands at an enormous 6ft 4in and with a stocky frame of 187lbs, he will impose a much needed physical presence in front of United’s back four. He is excellent on the ball and has a knack of scoring some vital goals as when he ironically scored against United in the opening fixture of the season to give Everton the 1-0 win. He is also capable playing a number of positions including playing as a defensive and attacking midfield and can also operate as a lone striker.
Though one has to be excited with the prospect of what the Belgian can bring to this United team. How will the Red Devils start out? And where will Fellaini play should he start?
During his time at Everton, Fellaini had this to say about his new position while at his former club, “I’m not a number 10. David Moyes predicts my future as a defensive midfielder, but due to a lack of offensive power, he plays me up front. In the future I want to play as a [number] six or an eight. From there, I can create danger and score goals.” Surley, this won’t be a problem for Moyes and his staff on where they should play Fellaini as they have heavily filled spots and should be given the defensive midfield role next to Carrick to form a powerful duo in the middle of the park. From this position, Fellaini can break up opposition play to allow more time on the ball for Carrick and other players as well. Fellaini can also start play from the back and give others a chance to score and his aerial ability gives United an edge when defending in their own territory and attacking in the opponent’s half as well. His huge presence is a intimidating factor as he can bully out most of the top class midfielders in the Premier League but help from the world-class, but underrated, Carrick should create a understanding that most teams may not be able to break down.
Manchester United will surely give Fellaini a starting role in his new no. 31 kit and play him in a box-to-box role that was previously occupied by Cleverley who has seen his stock fall over the years of underperforming. With currently injured players in the form of Wayne Rooney and Rafael whom are who to return to action on September 14th but that may not be the case as Moyes may not want to place them into the match day squad as of yet. Fletcher also remains to be out with his chronic bowel condition. So a here are two possible starting lineups for Saturday’s match:
