Found July 03, 2012 on Midwest Sports Fans:
Like so many other elite American men’s swimmers, Ricky Berens found himself stuck behind Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps. Berens, who won a gold medal in the 4 x 200 freestyle relay in Beijing and who actually upset Lochte and Phelps earlier this year in Charlotte, had the misfortune of his best event—the 200 freestyle—also being part of Lochte and Phelps’s Olympic program. In last week’s 200 freestyle final at the U.S. Olympic team trials in Omaha, Berens finished third behind (who else?) Phelps and Lochte. The third-place finish qualified Berens for another 4 x 200 relay team, but only two American swimmers qualify in each individual event. Monday Michael Phelps decided to drop the 200 freestyle from his program in London. No one was surprised that Phelps dropped an event, but most who follow the sport expected Phelps to scratch in the 400 individual medley. Late Monday morning Phelps’s coach, Bob Bowman, announced the decision on Twitter: @MichaelPhelps will be removing...

Turns out, seven is enough for Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps did a wise thing Monday: He gave up the chance to compete for another eight Olympic gold medals. The move will allow him to rest properly at the London Games and have time to recover between races, which is much more important now that he's 27 years old, his body battered by a dozen years of high-level swimming. He's out of an event that might be more loaded...

Ryan Lochte Wore A “I Heart Breast” Shirt At The Olympic Trials

Ryan Lochte is an Olympic swimmer who wore this shirt that says “I HEART BREAST” supporting breast cancer awareness. Lochte is a former Florida Gator who still lives in Gainesville to train. I can attest to Lochte’s love of the ladies since I’ve partied with him in Gainesville. The guy carried around a pitcher of Jager Bombs and was surrounded by hot chicks the entire time...

Phelps and Lochte are already breaking records

They just haven’t done so in the pool, yet. The intrigue of the friendly but fierce rivalry between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte might just be stronger than Phelps’ pursuit of 8 gold medals in Beijing if we are to gauge interest level by the overnight ratings of Saturday’s US Olympic Trials on NBC. There [...]

Phelps locks up another 8-race program in London

Phelps wrapped up another stellar week at the U.S. trials Sunday night, rallying to win the 100-meter butterfly and secure his spot in five individual races at the Olympics. Throw in the three relays, and that adds up to eight. Again. ''I guess that's OK,'' Phelps...

Sweet tweet lets Berens know he's in 200 freestyle

Good news traveled fast on Twitter for Ricky Berens. That's how he found out he would swim the 200-meter freestyle at the London Olympics after Michael Phelps announced Monday he was scratching the event. Berens had finished third at the trials, making him the first alternate. The 24-year-old from Charlotte, N.C., learned he would take Phelps' spot in a tweet sent by Phelps...

Olympic Notes: Usain Bolt Beaten, Run-Off Controversy, Big Nights For Phelps and Franklin

It’s July, which means that the 2012 Summer Olympics begin later this month. This weekend, we learned a lot about who will be competing in London and in what events. Here are some of the highlights: Track and Field When Usain Bolt crossed the 200-meter finish line in world-record time four years ago in Beijing, none of the other runners were same time zone. Bolt won’t have it...

Suddenly Wieber faces new challenge

If television time and media exposure told the whole story then the whole story of the 2012 Summer Olympics would come down to four people: Usain Bolt, the fastest man on earth. Michael Phelps, trying to add to the legend of his record-setting Beijing. Ryan Lochte, Phelps' top rival in the pool. And a preternaturally serious Michigan girl who turns 17 next week, the reigning...
