It was a bad day for seeded Belgians at the Chennai Open. Seventh-seeded Xavier Malisse and No. 8 seed Olivier Rochus were both ousted in the first round of the tournament  on Tuesday.

Malisse was taken out by countryman David Goffin 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. “He was sick I think … (with a) stomach ailment. He was tired,” Goffin told reporters. “He is never easy to play, even if he is sick he can hit the ball very hard.”

Rochus fell to Japan’s Yuichi Sugita 6-3, 6-4.

“It was one of the best matches I’ve played. This is one of the highest-ranked players I’ve beaten.”

“I hope to play this well in the coming rounds, and be prepared for the Australian Open qualifiers.” Sugita is ranked 235th in the world.
