For whatever reason I’ll never forget this match. Perhaps it was because it was Pete Sampras going out with a bang. Perhaps it was because we knew it might be the end of one of the greatest tennis rivalries in history. Whatever it was, it just sticks in my mind.

It was in fact the last match in their rivalry and it came at the 2002 US Open final. It was their first meeting in the final since Sampras won in 1995. Sampras went on to win the match in four sets and shortly after announced his retirement from the game. Agassi retired in 2006 after 20 years on the tour.
