Promoters evenko, StarGames and Madison Square Garden announced on Monday that The Montreal Rendez-Vous will return for its second year at the Bell Centre on March 18, 2013, at 7:00pm. The 2013 Rendez-Vous follows the successful debut of winter tennis in Montreal last year when Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Pat Cash and Michael Chang played in front of more than 8,200 fans.
The 2013 Rendez-Vous will feature “Canada vs The World” in a modified team format headlined by Milos Raonic, who, at age 21, is the youngest player in the ATP Tour’s top 15; the number one ranked Canadian of all time and tennis fastest rising superstar teaming with 18-year-old Montreal sensation and Wimbledon Junior Singles Champion, Eugenie Bouchard. Bouchard is Canada’s first player ever to win a Grand Slam singles title and recently reached her highest rank of #2 in the world on the ITF Junior rankings. The Westmount, Quebec beauty comes off a strong summer which has seen her climb to #166 on the WTA Tour rankings, her highest ranking ever. Raonic and Bouchard will battle The World Team which will be comprised of a top ranked male and female player to be named later.
”I’m very excited to return to Montreal. To be able to play in the Bell Center, during the Canadiens season, is a huge honor for me,” said the top ranked Canadian Raonic. “I am really looking forward to helping make winter tennis a tradition in Montreal. It should be an exciting event for all tennis and sports fans in Montreal”.
With Bouchard’s acceptance of her invitation to the Rendez-Vous, “It is really exciting for me to play on such a big stage at this point in my career. I have been to the Bell Centre many times for events so to have the chance to play there is something that I am sure I will always remember.”
The Rendez-Vous returns with a compelling story for a second year event. With the high profile surge of Canadian tennis as exemplified through the Wimbledon Junior Championships won by Bouchard (Girls Singles) and Filip Peliwo (Boys Singles and Doubles and US Open Junior), and the continued rise of the world’s #15 ranked Raonic, tennis continues to broaden its national sports importance. The Rendez-Vous remains committed to supporting Canadian tennis by showcasing its current as well as up-and-coming stars and has renewed its relationship with Tennis Montreal among other important grassroots organizations in Montreal.
Major brand sponsors, including the likes of Hyundai, BNP Paribas, Fiera Sceptre, Wilson, Nespresso and Intercontinental Hotels, were part of the inaugural Rendezvous while national and international television platforms broadcast the event around the world. Many of those sponsors have already indicated their on-going support of the 2013 Rendez-Vous and RDS and TSN will once again broadcast the night’s tennis–a portion to be telecast live along with several reairs to be programmed throughout their channel platforms.
The Rendez-Vous is collaboration between three sports promoters—the Bell Centre‘s production arm evenko, StarGames and Madison Square Garden. StarGames and Madison Square Garden are partners in New York‘s annual BNP Paribas Showdown which has become the world‘s most unique one-night tennis exhibition and seen the likes of Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters and John McEnroe participate on the Madison Square Garden court. In 2012, Federer competed against American Andy Roddick in the men’s match while top 10 stars Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki dueled in the women’s pairing. The event played to a capacity crowd of more than 18,000.
“We are delighted to be coming back to Montreal with the return of the Rendez-Vous. ” stated Jerry Solomon, President of StarGames and the event‘s Executive Producer. “Last year’s inaugural event, with more than 8,200 fans, surpassed our first year expectations, and we know that the 2013 version, headlined by Milos Raonic, will be even more compelling to the Montreal market. The Rendezvous will once again be the place to be for tennis fans on March 18.”
”For the second year in a row, evenko is proud to present this tennis event of international caliber at the Bell Centre, the city’s premier venue for prestigious events. Last year, we were treated to an evening of extraordinary tennis that brought together four tennis legends. The second edition will without a doubt be just as exciting with Canadian tennis stars Raonic and Bouchard”, added Jacques Aubé, Vice-President and General Manager, evenko.
“MSG Sports is excited about our on-going partnership with Evenko and StarGames as we continue to build our tennis platform and Showdown brand,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, Sports and Arena Transformation for Madison Square Garden. “The 2013 event, with emerging stars like Milos Raonic, should be a fantastic next step to creating a winter tennis classic which is perfect for a landmark building like the Bell Centre.”
