Probably not the type of press she wanted heading into Wimbledon… Rolling Stone is doing a feature on tennis star Serena Williams. During her visit with the magazine she did not hold back when talking about the Steubenville, Ohio rape case, in which two football players assaulted a 16-year-old girl while classmates watched and texted. As reported by Deadspin, when a news segment on the case appeared on television Serena shook her head and said: “Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.” Let me preface this by saying that a rapist can never justify their actions based on the circumstances, be it that the victim is drunk, high, “asked for it,” or was overly flirtatious. BUT Serena, speaking from a woman’s perspective, asked some very valid questions. The type of questions a lot of us ask in private when seeing stories like this. As a young woman I was taught to always be aware of my surroundings, always let someone know where you are or what you’re doing, use the buddy system when you’re out partying, and never trust strangers. Maybe I was a goodie goodie in high school, but drinking to the point of not remembering is something I can’t even fathom doing back then. Serena in no way said that she condones the actions of those football players. But will she be vilified for her comments in this day of social media and the mob mentality? Yes. Does that make her asking those questions wrong? No.  It will be interesting to see if she back-pedals from these comments or if she sticks to her initial gut reaction.

  • Serena is 100% right , how do you know this girl was really raped, some woman and yes some young teens and young women see things on the internet and thinks it fun or right, lets just face it, morals have went out the door, look what is on prime time, and the adults say I'm a adult I can watch what I want, its impossible to roll around in the mud with the pigs and stay clean. As adults some woman get drunk with the guys and they are the only woman there, now when they get her drunk ,I'm not saying its right or what they did was right , but, most men not all, are going to take advantage. If you get close enough to a rattlesnake when he warns you with a rattle, you get bit right ! Remember they were all just kids and the severity of the punishment for those menchildren was harsh, and we still don't know what really went on , ladies and gentlemen we don't know if the fact the parents found out she was drunk didn't make her fabricate up a story as crazy as it seems some of these teens get together and paln these things and if they don't get caught its there little secret, but if they get cusght sometimes the other throws the one under the bus. Women get raped and its a brutal and wrong thing, I have a lot of aqaintances that this has happened to, but, some females will get drunk sleep with more than one guy at a time, and blame it on the liquor and had a pre desgned plan to do this because the wanted to know what it feels like, teenagers some not all are doing the same things, they are smarter now in there teen about sex and other things than we as teens in the 80's and the 90's ever were. We can't even touch them and when things go there way and they don't get caught everything is all good ,but, when there's a price to pay the grab the i'm a victim hat. I worked in a school system for over 10 years and I seen the true and the fake, the big played teen and the I'm playing you teen. Serena told you the truth now handle it get off her back.
