French track and field athlete Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad won the 3,000 meter steeplechase gold medal at the European Championships in Helsinki. Unfortunately, his win will be overshadowed by his actions after the race when a Spongebob Squarepants-lookalike mascot tried to hand Mekhissi-Benabbad a gift bag. Mekhissi-Benabbad knocked the gift bag out of the mascot's hand and then shoved the mascot itself, probably not realizing that inside the costume was a 14 year old girl.

We hope that Mekhissi-Benabbad apologizes to this girl, and quickly for his sake, before the girl turns around and presses charges.

A similar incident took place in the sport of college football back in January when West Virginia defensive back Darwin Cook tackled the Orange Bowl mascot after scoring a touchdown, only to find out later that a young girl was inside the costume.
