The average wrestling fan takes their favorite performers for granted.  Some of these performers do this for a living…some do it as a weekend job for extra cash to make ends meet.  Whatever their position in the business is, one thing remains the same, 99% of them work their asses off to put on an entertaining show and put on entertaining matches.  These performers wrestle through loss, through pain, through everything and anything you can think of. CM Punk this past monday night made an incredible point.  Punk is a fighting champion, almost to a fault.  Punk fights every single night he is asked to.  The schedule that the current WWE superstar has to endure is downright INSANE.  Today is January 10th.  Just to give you an idea of how insane the WWE schedule is there is 20 days left in January as of this writing.  There are 18 dates including a PPV.  The top guys are at most of these shows and perform on them.  This kind of schedule can really destroy these guys and gals bodies and quite often there are injuries.  TNA in comparison has 9 shows for the rest of this month, half of what the WWE roster has to endure.  Granted not all WWE shows have the full roster present.  The indy promotions usually have 2 shows per month.  There are MANY indy promotions and many of the top independent wrestlers wrestle for many different promotions.  The top guys most likely have 8 dates in a given month at the most. This brings me to the difference between the indy product and the WWE/TNA products.  A lot of the independent wrestlers are not as polished, take tons of chances, wrestle longer matches, and put their body on the line for every match.  When these guys get injured, there’s no big company protecting their financial interests.  If wrestling is how they make a living, an injury is potentially devastating to their career and their livelihood.  While it is true that WWE has more dates and their workers barely get to rest, it is easy to see how independent wrestlers, working half the dates as WWE wrestlers, work harder and put themselves in much more danger. This past weekend Kevin Steen, the ROH champion, and one of the darlings of independent wrestling, had a terrible back injury.  Instead of doing what he should have done and sat the night out, he decided to perform for the paying fans.  Kevin Steen owes these fans absolutely NOTHING.  Sure, they pay their hard earned money to see a huge main event of Steen vs. co-indy darling Johnny Gargano, but no amount of money paid by fans should dictate what a man chooses to do with his body which controls his livelihood.  Steen came out and was brutally honest, out of character to the live crowd and they worked out a main event tag match to take pressure off of Steen and his bad back.  Being on top of the indies is just as hard as being on top of the WWE, if not harder because they don’t have the same safeguards. Punk took a shot at Bruno Sammartino, an absolute legend in wrestling, on raw.  Punk conjectured, correctly might I add, that Sammartino’s schedule was nothing  compared to Punk’s.  Punk has been champ for over 400 days and has wrestled on many of those days during his reign.  Sammartino’s reign was longer than Punk could ever come near but they may very well get close to the same amount of title defenses if you count house shows, which you absolutely should.  At the end of the day, I’m sure Punk has the utmost respect for Sammartino and is going for real heat and his achieving his goal beautifully. Next time you see a wrestling show, think about more than just the match in front of you, think about more than kayfabe once a match ends (who am I to tell you how to cheer during a match), give respect to these men and ladies that gives their lives to entertain you. Til next time.
