Amanda Serrano (47-4-1, 30 KOs) is all set to face Reina Tellez (13-0-1, 5 KOs) at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on January 3. With barely a few days left for the fight, Serrano is not only looking to win the fight, but she’s got a bigger plan in mind.
During their press conference, Serrano spoke about her career plans as a boxer and her wish to continue opening doors for women’s boxing.
“I truly want to continue to open the doors for women in this sport,” she said. “It’s been a long journey, and I love seeing these women here grow and get the opportunities, get the better pay days, and I’m taking it one fight at a time, but I do have goals. I need the record of knockouts. I need 50 wins, so there are certain goals. I gotta keep on going.”
That record currently belongs to Christy Martin, who retired with 32 knockout wins, the most of any female boxer in history. She fought in an era when women’s boxing had shorter rounds, fewer fights, and little promotion. Despite all this, she actively sought out knockouts, fighting aggressively to end the fight explosively.
While Serrano already has 30 knockouts, she has only had 1 TKO victory in her last ten fights. Moreover, at 37, it is no secret that she has few professional appearances left. With all these roadblocks, it will certainly be a worthwhile watch to see how she secures those 3 KO victories.
However, Serrano is set on leaving a legacy that goes beyond records.
“I want to be remembered as a game changer. As someone who is helping the sport, women’s boxing, and sports in general,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Puerto Rican is certainly excited to be fighting in her home country, and she has promised boxing aficionados a treat on fight night.
“I’m super excited to be here. The last time I fought in Puerto Rico was right here [at Plaza del Tótem],” she said during the press conference. “The ring was right here in the middle, and I got a stoppage. It was an amazing night, and I’m excited to be here again with this amazing card, amazing fighters, and amazing women. You guys are in for a treat Saturday night.”
