Sheesh: Canelo Alvarez knocked out the man who began Arturo Gatti’s downfall
On August 22, 1998, Arturo Gatti went head-to-head with Ivan Robinson inside Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.
The pair started at a ferocious pace, landing huge shots, that left fans on the edge of their seats.
By the second round, Gatti was detonating huge hooks, while Robinson was finding uppercuts, with one of which rocking his rival’s head back.
As the fight progressed, the American grew in confidence, connecting with flashy combinations, until a right hand sent him crashing towards the canvas.
Refusing to give in, Robinson fought fire with fire, and in the sixth, the pair visibly wobbled each other with powerful blows.
Slowly but surely, ‘Mighty’ began to come into the ascendancy, taking the fight to Gatti and getting the better of the exchanges.
However, the icon never gave up, nearly taking his foe out in the final round with a monstrous punch.
But it wasn’t enough, with Robinson surviving and ultimately winning via split decision.
The bout was awarded the Ring Magazine Upset of the Year and Fight of the Year.
Gatti’s wars with Robinson and Micky Ward were truly special.
However, ‘Thunder’ had many more exciting bouts.
On a crazy night, Gatti was dropped before getting up to win.
