Following the controversial ninth-round incident in Gervonta Davis' draw with Lamont Roach on Saturday, the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has announced an official review of Davis' actions.

The final decision made by the NYSAC could have major implications for the fight’s outcome.

A statement from the NYSAC explained that instant replay was unavailable due to a technical issue.

“During the round in question, following the commission’s request for the replay video, there was a technical issue preventing the commission from receiving it within the allotted time to review," NYSAC stated. "Therefore, the referee’s in-ring decision was relied upon and the fight continued.”

Davis and Roach fought to a draw at Barclays Center, allowing Davis to retain his WBA lightweight title in a rather controversial evening.

The ninth round saw Davis voluntarily take a knee, claiming something had entered his eye. Referee Steve Willis initially started a knockdown count but then stopped it, allowing Davis to have his eye cleaned before continuing the fight.

Roach reacted to the review on social media, suggesting the commission could overturn the result.

“Word round the block yall fav fight finna be 30-1 not 30-0-1… 2X x 2 Division champ,” Roach wrote on X.

Davis explained after the fight that hair grease had dripped into his eyes, forcing him to take a knee.

“I just got my hair done two days ago and she put grease in my (expletive), so the (expletive) was like sweating and things like that and the grease coming in my face,” Davis said. “It burned my eyes type (expletive), yeah. I didn't want to get caught while my eyes was burning. And you can't get knocked out like that. So I'd rather take the knee.”

However, his hairstylist, known as “Lee B The Brand,” dismissed his excuse in a now-deleted Instagram post.

“I did his hair WEDNESDAY, It’s SATURDAY! He did press, gym and weigh in,” she wrote. “That’s no excuse, how much grease did I use damn.”

NYSAC’s review could potentially lead to an overturning of Willis’ decision, impacting Davis' record and Roach’s standing in the division. It's unknown when the NYSAC will announce the final decision.
