WBO Welterweight Champion Brian Norman Jr. boxes Devin Haney on November 22, as we preview the upcoming fight.
The fight takes place on the David Benavidez vs. Anthony Yarde undercard. Norman Jr. retained his belt with a fifth-round knockout of Jin Sasaki. Meanwhile, Haney is pursuing a title in a third weight class after winning belts at 135 and 140. Haney beat Jose Ramirez in May to put the Ryan Garcia no-contest behind him. A victory over the undefeated Norman Jr. would undoubtedly be Haney’s biggest win.
“I just don’t know. I’m ready to see what the new story is now. I’ve been doubted my whole life so I’m actually hoping they doubt me again. That’s what I’m hoping. I just want another challenge. I hope they throw somebody else at me and say ‘well, you can’t beat him,” Norman Jr. stated
“I think my power and punch resistance will be better, my mind will be more clear. I think I’ll just be better overall. I feel a lot better. I had a great camp last fight. My weight cut went good, but I think that I’ll be even stronger, 147 is just the division for me now. I knew that I would be at 147 one day. I didn’t know how long it would be or when it would, but I knew. My dad [and trainer, Bill Haney] has been telling me for a while that I was gonna be at my best at 147, I think he’s right,” Haney said
Norman Jr. will look to close the distance immediately, utilizing consistent forward pressure to trap Haney on the ropes, denying the challenger the space he needs for his footwork and lateral movement. Norman Jr. must use combinations to breach Haney’s defense and land flush, body shots to drain Haney’s gas tank. Given Haney was floored multiple times by Ryan Garcia, Norman Jr. will be aware that his best chance lies in landing a power shot.
Haney will approach this fight with the goal of minimizing risk, controlling the distance, and exposing Norman Jr.’s tendency to take unnecessary risks. Haney will rely on his jab as his foundational weapon, using it to maintain space, disrupt Norman Jr.’s rhythm, and set up his straight right hand. Haney will rarely stand still, utilizing his footwork to avoid the champion’s heavy shots.
