Can Tony Harrison Rediscover His Form?

Tony Harrison will make his boxing return against Edward Diaz on the Claressa Shields vs. Lani Daniels card on July 26, as we look at his career.

The 34-year-old’s career has suffered of late. He has not been in the ring since Tim Tszyu stopped him in their 2023 fight. The result meant that Harrison has not tasted victory since the Sergio Garcia win in 2022. However, Harrison has come a long way. Harrison was born in 1990 in Detroit, Michigan. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Henry Hank, who was a former boxer. His father Ali Salaam was also a pro boxer.

Harrison eventually made it pro in 2011, as he secured a world title shot six years later. He faced off against Jarrett Hurd for the IBF Junior Middleweight Title. Unfortunately, Harrison came up short as he suffered a ninth-round TKO. However, that only gave Harrison more motivation to get over the line. In 2018, Harrison got another crack at a title. He faced the undefeated Jermell Charlo for the WBC Junior Middleweight Title.

Harrison delivered on the biggest stage, using his jab and movement to stay out of harm’s way to put on a clinical performance with a unanimous decision win. Although Harrison lost the rematch, he finally broke that mental hurdle of what was needed to secure a world title.

Harrison Reacts

Outside of boxing, Harrison gives back to the community. He is the co-owner of the SuperBad Boxing Gym in Detroit that offers a place for the next generation to stay healthy. The WBC also acknowledged Harrison with the Recognition Award for his service to his community. The question now is whether Harrison can rediscover his best form. The former world champion was still as bullish as ever.

“We are excited to get back in there and get to work. It’s been a minute, but we are going to roll out like George Foreman did for his comeback. I have a short window left, so we are going to be active, keep winning, and eventually get back to the mountain top. Regaining a world title is my No. 1 goal, and I am feeling very strong at 160. It all starts once again in my hometown. Let’s eat,” Harrison said
