Danny Garcia has opened up on his departure from Golden Boy Promotions for Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).

The departure occurred in the aftermath of the split between Golden Boy and Al Haymon in 2015. Haymon would end up taking a large number of  Golden Boy’s stable, including star names like Deontay Wilder, the Charlo brothers (Jermall and Jermell), and Garcia. While Garcia would later go on to become a two-weight world champion, with belts at 140 and 147, Danny admitted that his career was caught in the middle. Garcia revealed that a lack of communication made it easier for him to leave Golden Boy for PBC.

Garcia Reacts

“Eric Gomez is the one who got me with Golden Boy. So him and Shelly Finkel went to the trials and scouted me, so that’s how I got signed with Golden Boy. I don’t think Oscar really started to know who I was until I started to beat the bigger fighters.

“Oscar was doing what he was doing back then. I tell people if Oscar was more involved like the way he is today, I think none of his fighters would have left him. I think he is more involved, and he really loves what he does now. When I went with PBC, I didn’t even know I was leaving Golden Boy. Yeah, so I didn’t know that Golden Boy was going to be out of the picture,” Garcia said

Was It The Right Move?

The move was undoubtedly the right decision. Garcia went on to become a two-weight world champion under the PBC banner, capturing belts at both 140 and 147 pounds. This is a major accomplishment that cemented his legacy as a top-tier fighter.

With PBC, he also had the opportunity to fight on major networks like CBS, which were part of PBC’s strategy to bring boxing back to free-to-air television. His unification fight with Keith Thurman in 2017 was a massive event that was broadcast live in primetime, an opportunity that he may not have received with Golden Boy at the time.

While he had a successful career with PBC, he was part of a large stable of fighters, which meant he was never truly the singular star of the promotion. His time at Golden Boy could have been a chance for him to be the face of the promotion after Canelo Alvarez, but he was swept up in the mass exodus of top fighters. However, Garcia has achieved what most boxers never will, as he can look back on his career on a positive note.
