Once seen as the most feared puncher in the heavyweight division, former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is mounting a comeback. Despite losing four of his last five fights. Including a crushing defeat to Zhilei Zhang, many believed the “Bronze Bomber” had reached the end of the road. Retirement seemed like the natural next step. But Wilder isn’t ready to hang up the gloves just yet. He’ll be facing Tyrrell Herndon on June 27 at Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas.
Now in the twilight of his career, he’s on a mission to prove that he still belongs among boxing’s elite. Driven by pride, power, and the hunger to reclaim his place at the top, Wilder is looking to fight his way back into title contention one punch at a time.
Recently Deontay Wilder went on Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show.” To promote his upcoming fight and he made it clear about the idea of hanging his gloves up.
“I’ve never thought about giving up, I never thought about quitting,” Wilder said. “I never thought about retiring. These are all rumors and stuff, and this is what I’m saying people don’t know anything. Most people want to be first rather than be correct. We are living in a world today where you want to put everything out on social media to get clicks and likes to make some money.”
Deontay Wilder will needs to put on an impressive show against a relatively unknown fighter. Struggling against Herndon would be almost as bad as losing the fight. With a signature knockout win, Wilder’s name can get back into the conversation of some big money fights. His future lies in his power right hand.
