Saturday night marks the return of top super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco (22-0, 18 KOs) as he faces the surging, undefeated veteran Steven Nelson (20-0, 16 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round fight. The winner looks to be in line for a title eliminator or an interim title opportunity later this year as the division’s king, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, will have his hands full with other opponents.
Pacheco fought twice last year, but the most memorable of the two was his sixth-round demo job of Maciej Sulecki. It was a tough test on paper against a guy who had never been stopped, but Pacheco showed poise and patience as he gave the fans at the Dignity Sports & Health Park their pound of flesh. Now, he is headlining a card in Las Vegas and is on the brink of a title opportunity. Can he look just as impressive against Nelson on Saturday night?
When it comes to his opponent Nelson, he’s had a run a lot later in life than most fighters these days. The 36-year-old is undefeated and has fought his way to this opportunity on Saturday against Pacheco. Nelson impressed onlookers at the BMO Stadium in August when he knocked out Marcos Rodriguez in five rounds. Is this the moment Nelson puts the division on notice by beating a young, top contender?
