Eddie Hearn In Talks For Callum Smith’s Next Opponent

Callum Smith is eyeing a big fight under the stewardship of Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.

Smith was able to bury his defeat to Artur Beterbiev early last year with wins coming against Carlos Galvan and Joshua Buatsi, and took his title to become WBO’s interim light heavyweight champion.

Unlike his Match with Carlos Galvan, which he won via TKO, the match against Buatsi had to go all 12 rounds for him to win it via Unanimous decision of 119-110, 115-113, and 116-112 as per the judges' scorecards.

Although Eddie Hearn has not yet given any updates on Smith’s next fight, the promoter is said to be having meetings during the week, and by the end of the week, the boxer will be able to know what's on the cards for his next steps after his win back in February.

Smith (31-2, 22 KOs) did not talk a lot about the speculations of him facing David Benavidez (30-3, 24 KOs) next. Benavidez “The Mexican Monster” is currently unbeaten and the WBC and WBA (regular) light heavyweight champion now.

Smith is not that enthusiastic about the thought of fighting Benavidez as he eyes a chance to face the winner of the Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev 3 in their trilogy.

It would be a huge risk for Smith to face Benavidez, as it would affect his chances of facing either of the two. Facing Bivol or Beterbiev means a huge payday for the boxer and Matchroom Boxing. This means Smith must win the fight against Benavidez if he wants that to happen, a huge risk that Eddie Hearn might not be willing to take.

In his last fight, Smith managed to scrap a win over his opponent (Joshua Buatsi) after 12 rounds, and he knows that when it comes to David Benavidez, it’s a whole different game. That is why it is easily understandable why the Brit would be reluctant to face ‘The Mexican Monster’.
