Eddie Hearn: Terence Crawford Has To Be ‘Boring’ To Beat Canelo Alvarez

If you were expecting an exciting fight during the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) vs. Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) showdown, there just might be a change of plans. According to Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn , Crawford would have to resort to “boring” tactics to ensure his victory.

Talking to Ring Magazine, Hearn expressed his doubts about Alvarez’s portfolio ahead of the fight, stating that he hasn’t had the necessary pound-for-pound wins before facing Alvarez.

“If you look at Canelo’s resume, it’s unbelievable. But Crawford really hasn’t had the fights. I said to him, ‘Who’s your best win?’ He said, ‘Ricky Burns.’ He was one of my fighters. Ricky Burns was a great champion, but where are the pound-for-pound wins?” he said.

It is not surprising as to why he considers his WBO lightweight title win fight from 2014 as his best win (the second title win of his career), especially when he has fought the likes of Amir Khan and Shawn Porter. There are very few fighters from his resume that he considers elite, like Viktor Postol, for instance.

Hearn believes that this might be the fight that pushes Crawford to greatness, even though he feels like size might prove to be a problem. However, there is a rather “boring” way to circumvent this, or so he says.

“This is the fight that will make Terence great. I give him every chance in the fight,” he said. “I think for the Crawford fight, he’ll really get himself up for that fight. I just think the movement is going to cause him a lot of problems. Crawford has got to fight a boring fight to beat him. He’ll engage way more than Scull.”

“Crawford Has A Chance”

While Hearn might have given his advice on the tactics, he has still given Alvarez the edge on fight night. And it looks like Hearn is not the only one. In fact, during his recent presser, Sebastian Fundora also gave his prediction on the potential winner of the fight.

“Canelo. He’s comfortable at 168. He’s been fighting there. He went and collected all the belts in that weight class,” he said without any hesitation when asked about the fight.

However, he also believes that Crawford has a rather substantial chance of victory. “Of course, Crawford has a chance. He has a big chance, being one of the pound-for-pound fighters in the world. It’s just the advantage of being there first. You know what to expect in that weight class,” he said.
