On September 21, 2024, at Wembley Stadium, Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) was brutally stopped by Daniel Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs). Since then, AJ’s future has been speculated about, with many wondering when or if we will see him back in the ring. Carl Froch, speaking to Poker Strategy, dismissed the idea of a Joshua comeback at the highest level apart from one fight that “makes sense.”

‘He’s Finished’: Froch Addresses AJ’s Future

Joshua has not been seen since being knocked out against Dubois but many are speculating who AJ could face should he return. Many have called for Joshua-Tyson Fury, and recently Frank Warren addressed the rumours: “That would tempt all of us, to get him to do it,” Warren said of a fight between Fury and Joshua.

“That’s the fight everybody wants to see, a generational fight.

“I know AJ wants it, Tyson at one stage did want it and we were close but it didn’t happen.

“You never know what can happen in boxing.”

Carl Froch also feels it’s the only fight that makes sense for Anthony Joshua: “AJ can’t fight anybody except for finished, past their best boxers, he’s finished. It’s gonna be Tyson Fury if he decides to come out of retirement. It’s the only fight that makes any sense for AJ.

“If he fights Dubois again, he is going to get splattered. Look how bad that first fight was. He’d have no confidence coming back into the ring. And that was his last fight as well.”

Anthony Joshua Return

In a recent interview with The Stomping Ground, Eddie Hearn discussed AJ’s return, making it clear it is not a question of Fury or retirement: “We’re not waiting for Tyson Fury, if that opportunity jumps up in the meantime, fantastic, if not we’lljust get fit, get ready and decide who we’re going to fight.”

It remains to be seen what is left for AJ, but when looking at potential opponents for Joshua and Fury, all signs point to a mega fight. Fury also posted a social media clip of himself in the gym with SugarHill Steward, fueling speculation his return from retirement was imminent.
