The WBC Cruiserweight title this weekend pits the champ Badou Jack against Noel Mikaelian in their rematch, as Jack makes his case for being a ‘Future Hall of Famer.’

Jack initially captured the WBC title in 2023 with a 12th-round TKO victory over Junior Makabu. However, his first defense against Mikaelian in May ended with a highly contentious majority decision victory for the champion. The result was so disputed that the WBC stepped in and ordered an immediate rematch.

The pay-per-view card carries a significant charitable angle. Billed as “Championing Mental Health presents CMH 2: Rematch Season,” the event, priced at $29.99, is committed to giving back. A portion of every purchase—$1 from each PPV buy—will be directed to Championing Mental Health, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Jack is a three-weight world champion, with belts at super middleweight, light heavyweight and cruiserweight. Jack also has wins against the likes of Anthony Dirrell, George Groves and Lucian Bute while also securing draws against Adonis Stevenson and James DeGale. Jack remains hopeful he will see some recognition once he retires.

“I am not here for the fame or the attention. I just fight my ass off in the ring. If people love it, perfect. Hall of Fame or not, my career isn’t finished. I still have some time left, and we will see what happens. I hope so, yeah. I fought a lot of big names and beat a lot of them, too,” Jack said

The Case

The strongest case for Jack’s Hall of Fame case is his status as a three-weight world champion. This places him in elite company, as few boxers ever manage to conquer three divisions. Moreover, he did not pad his record with easy defenses; his best victories and defining performances came against established, high-level opposition.

Jack upset the odds to win his first title by defeating the undefeated Anthony Dirrell. He followed that by beating highly-rated British contender George Groves. Crucially, he faced top-tier boxers like James DeGale (resulting in a draw) and squared off against knockout artist Adonis Stevenson for a Light Heavyweight title draw.

While the number of belts is impressive, the primary challenge to Jack’s Hall of Fame case is the lack of long, dominant, and unified title reigns. His WBA Light Heavyweight title reign was short, and he never unified the belts at either 168 or 175 pounds. Furthermore, his recent controversial majority decision over Mikaelian, which led the WBC to mandate an immediate rematch, does not contribute to a narrative of clear, sustained dominance.
