As the hunt continues to find an opponent for heavyweight Derek ‘War’ Chisora, one name has surfaced, and it’s a fighter that was linked to a Chisora fight a year ago: Zhilei Zhang.

A week ago, Queensberry Boss Frank Warren spoke to talkSPORT and announced a December 13 show at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena featuring Chisora (36-13, 23 KOs) and heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs) in separate fights. Rumors were swirling that former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder could be a potential opponent, but since then, things have quieted down.

On Tuesday afternoon, the 42-year-old Zhang (27-3-1, 22 KOs), who was last seen in February when he suffered a TKO loss to Agit Kabayel, posted a video on Instagram using some humor while soliciting for a fight with Chisora. In the video, Zhang is approached by his trainer and is asked, “What’s wrong?” Zhang replied: “I’m thinking…about someone.” Then it cuts to an in-ring interview from about a year ago where Chisora asks Zhang if he wants to fight him. Then, cutting back to the present day, Zhang says, “I want to fight you. I want to bang you. Maybe, you want to bang me too.”

FightsATW reached out to Terry Lane, one of Zhang’s advisors, to see if there is any traction with a potential fight between Zhang and Chisora. “It’s a fight that we like and that the fans will too, so we are very interested in that fight,” said Lane. It was also mentioned that contrary to what has been said on social media, Zhang was never offered the Itauma fight as the Lane brothers have been trying to put together an event in China for January. However, they would gladly delay those plans if there were an opportunity to fight Chisora in December.

This is an interesting situation, as the event, which is likely to be a PPV, will be Chisora’s 50th fight and his supposed farewell bout. Is there an appetite for Chisora to be fed an easy one on the way out? It’s unlikely, so the matchup with Zhang would make a lot of sense and provide the type of entertainment the heavyweight division has historically offered. Will we see Chisora vs. Zhang on December 13? Is that a fight fans would tune in to watch? Only time will tell, and FightsATW will provide any updates to this developing story.
