Jake Paul takes on Anthony Joshua on December 19, as we preview this upcoming fight.
The announcement came after Paul’s originally scheduled fight against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis was called off. The replacement opponent, Joshua, represents a massive step up in competition. The fight is scheduled for eight, three-minute rounds, with both men set to wear standard 10-ounce gloves.
Paul has primarily competed as a cruiserweight (200 pounds), though he weighed 227.25 pounds for his exhibition bout against Mike Tyson last year. Paul is coming off a June victory over 39-year-old Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Meanwhile, Joshua is a legitimate heavyweight champion who has weighed as much as 256 pounds in his professional career. Joshua has been out of the ring since being stopped by Daniel Dubois in September of last year, but his pedigree as an Olympic Gold Medalist and a former unified champion makes him the favorite.

“I don’t think he can knock me out because he’s not going to be able to line up his shots properly to be able to land the hard punch. I think it’s going to be a very tough fight for multiple rounds, but then when I figure out his pacing, his style, his speed, his footwork, he’s going to get a little bit tired trying to chase me around and then I’m going to set up the shot. “I’m not going to say exactly what, but I see what it is and I think it will end in the fifth or sixth round,” Jake Paul stated
“If I’m a betting man, it’s not really worth betting on Anthony Joshua cause he’s such a heavy favourite. I bet on Jake Paul to win for a no contest, draw, technical draw or something crazy to happen. I bet Jake Paul finds a way to win or get a draw, technical draw, cause you’ll get 10-1 odds. I’d say yeah, don’t put your life savings on it but if you’re going to have a little flutter, you’d get something back. I would be the biggest sporting upset if this happens, not just boxing, in any sport, if someone with such a lack of experience at the world level challenges someone who is world level and has proven it,” Haye said
Joshua’s main advantage is a superiority in size, power, and experience. His tactical plan will focus on maintaining distance with his jab and landing his heavy shots as quickly as possible. This allows him to dictate the pace and prevent Paul from closing the distance. His strategy will be to use the jab to set up his devastating combinations, particularly his right cross and uppercuts. While looking for an early finish, Joshua must stay defensively responsible.
Paul’s game plan will be built on survival, exploiting Joshua’s potential vulnerabilities (such as occasional stiffness or hesitation), and creating a single opportunity for a fight-changing shot. Paul’s core tactic will be constant lateral movement to evade Joshua’s powerful punches. Paul’s most dangerous weapon is his powerful right hand. His strategy will involve staying just outside of Joshua’s punching range and looking to land this shot as a counter when Joshua commits.
