Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Friday that boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. had an outstanding arrest warrant in Mexico dating back to 2023, but authorities were unable to act on it because he had been residing primarily in the United States.

“He wasn’t arrested before because he was mostly in the U.S.,” Sheinbaum stated during a press briefing, acknowledging the cross border complexity of Chávez Jr.’s legal issues.

This comes just days after Chávez was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying a tourist visa and allegedly submitting fraudulent documentation in a permanent residency application.

“The hope is that he will be deported and serve the sentence in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said during her daily news briefing.

Just days after suffering a high-profile loss to Jake Paul in Anaheim.  Former WBC middleweight champion Julio César Chávez Jr. is now facing serious legal trouble.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Chávez was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying a tourist visa, which he entered the United States on in August 2023. That visa expired in February 2024.

Cartel ties?

Authorities also allege that Chávez attempted to illegally obtain permanent U.S. residency by submitting multiple fraudulent statements in a marriage-based green card application on April 2, 2024. The application was linked to his marriage to Frida Muñoz, whose daughter is the granddaughter of infamous Sinaloa Cartel kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

In a further escalation. U.S. officials claim Chávez is suspected of having connections to the Sinaloa Cartel. One of the world’s most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations. The cartel is responsible for widespread drug trafficking and violence across Mexico and beyond.

While no formal cartel related charges have been filed at this time. Officials noted these alleged ties as part of the rationale for his detention. Chavez remains in ICE custody while his immigration status and criminal allegations are reviewed. But legal proceedings are expected to follow, and his boxing future is now deeply uncertain amid mounting legal complications.
