Keyshawn Davis was finally officially presented with the WBO belt by President Gustavo Olivieri in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Davis (13-0, 9 KOs), currently rated at No. 3 by the Ring at lightweight, gained the championship status back in February after a wonderful display against Denys Berinchyk. Davis got the win after just four rounds due to a combination of vicious body shots on his opponent.
Davis was present to witness when Ring, WBA, and WBO titlist Oscar Collazo was receiving his WBO ring for 5 successful defenses.
The newly crowned champion is already set for his first title defense challenge set to take place on June 7th. The event will be hosted at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. This is a familiar venue for Davis as he has competed there before and managed to come out victorious stopping his Argentinian opponent Gustavo Lemos in just two rounds.
Once terms have been agreed upon, Davis will face Edwin De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) in the title defense on June 7th. De Los Santos has not been in the ring for quite some time now. His last time in the ring saw him lose to Shakur Stevenson in what is one of the poorest performances of his tenure in boxing.
Davis last fought in his hometown on Nov. 8, a fight that he won after dropping Gustavo Lemos three times before being handed the victory through a third-round stoppage. It will be entertaining for his home fans to witness him defend his first title in front of his home crowd and against an inactive opponent in Edwin De Los Santos.
With a title on the line, and Davis being among the people with the fewest fights needed to become a world champion in the lightweight division, he would like to keep it that way by retaining the title and going for other titles in his weight class.
