Teofimo Lopez captured a world title in his third weight division Saturday night, taking a majority decision over Rolando Romero to claim the WBA welterweight belt.
Lopez, who previously held straps at lightweight and junior welterweight, moved up to 147 pounds and controlled the action against Romero at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. ESPN reported the result, with judges scoring the bout in Lopez's favour after twelve rounds.
The Brooklyn native now stands alongside boxing's multi-weight elite, having collected gold at 135, 140, and 147 pounds before his 28th birthday. Romero, who entered as the defending champion, failed to land the power shots that defined his previous title run.
Lopez targeted Romero's body throughout, mixing in hooks upstairs when openings appeared. The former unified lightweight champion used lateral movement to frustrate Romero's aggression and limit exchanges in close quarters.
The win positions Lopez for bigger fights at welterweight, where champions Errol Spence Jr., Terence Crawford, and Jaron Ennis hold rival belts. No immediate next opponent has been announced.
