More than 24 years after bursting onto the U.S. boxing scene at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Manny Pacquiao returned to the very venue where his legend began hoping to make history as the oldest fighter to win a welterweight world title.
In a closely contested battle with WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, the 46 year old Pacquiao fought with heart, flashes of vintage speed, and relentless pressure. But after 12 hard rounds, the fight was ruled a majority draw. With that, Barrios retained his title, and Pacquiao left Las Vegas empty handed to the disappointment of the pro Pacquiao crowd.

“I thought I won the fight,” a dejected Pacquiao said. “It was a close fight. He was very tough.”
Despite Pacquiao’s fast start and moments of vintage brilliance, it was Barrios who won all three of the final rounds on each judge’s scorecard a late surge that turned the tide and preserved his WBC welterweight title. The result isa majority draw, with two judges scoring it 114-114 and one edging it 115-113 for Barrios.
“His stamina is crazy,” Barrios said. “He’s still strong as hell and his timing is real. He’s still a very awkward fighter to try to figure out.”
“I’ll do the rematch,” Barrios said. “Absolutely. This was huge for boxing. I’d love to do it again.”
Pacquiao landed 101 of 577 punches (17.5%) to Barrios’ 120 of 658 (18.2%), but Pacquiao managed to outland his opponent 81-75 in power punches.
Manny Pacquiao showed last night that he is able to compete against all of the elite fighters at welterweight still. He was out landed by the champion, but Pacquiao did land more power punches.
In order to beat the champion, you have to decisively take his title. And, Manny Pacquiao did not do that last night. So, the judges did have it correct by calling the fight a draw and allowing Barrios to keep his title. But we might be able to see this again as both fighters would love to run this fight back again.
“I need to continue my training for longer going into a championship fight,” “Because of the election I started late, but it’s OK. Of course I’d like a rematch. I want to leave a legacy and make the Filipino people proud.”
