Oleksandr Usyk’s next move remains uncertain, but the 38-year-old unified heavyweight champion made one thing clear at the WBC’s annual convention in Bangkok: he has no plans to walk away from boxing and every plan to reclaim his position as the undisputed king.
Fresh off another turbulent year in the sanctioning-body landscape, Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) reaffirmed his intentions to keep fighting at the very top of the division.
While addressing delegates at the opening ceremony of the WBC’s 63rd annual convention, Usyk took a moment to praise the only organization that has not stripped him of its championship.
“The green belt is always my favorite,” Usyk said. “I should have four belts. Some people are saying I’m not undisputed champion anymore. Well, that is only temporary.”
Usyk voluntarily relinquished his WBO title last month a move that elevated interim champion Fabio Wardley to full titleholder status just 23 days after Wardley’s dramatic 11th-round knockout of Joseph Parker.
The decision mirrored what happened last year, when Usyk dropped a belt after outpointing Tyson Fury in May 2024, choosing instead to pursue an immediate rematch in Riyadh that December.

Now, without a pressing mandatory challenger tied to any organization, Usyk and his team have rare breathing room in a heavyweight division that has been chaotic, political, and unpredictable.
This flexibility could allow them to assess:
Whether Wardley remains the priority
Whether a massive trilogy fight with Tyson Fury is inevitable
Whether Dubois or another top contender resurfaces
Or whether a new commercial opportunity emerges in Riyadh or London
Notably, Usyk already shut down speculation linking him to rising phenom Moses Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs), with Lapin stating they have no interest in fast-tracking the 19-year-old into that level of danger.
Usyk turns 39 early next year, but remains undefeated, uncontroversially No. 1 at heavyweight, and still the most technically complete big man in the world. While the division is rich with talent Wardley’s rise, Dubois’ improvements, Fury’s uncertain future, and Anthony Joshua’s resurgence—none have proven they can clearly surpass the Ukrainian great.
The clock may be ticking, but Usyk continues to control his own narrative.
Whether he chooses Wardley, Fury, Dubois, or a left-field opponent in 2026, one thing is clear: Usyk intends to become undisputed again—and believes it’s only a matter of time.
