Oscar De La Hoya has hit back at Vergil Ortiz Jr., saying he is still under contract, after the latter filed a lawsuit.

Ortiz Jr. is looking for a way out of his partnership with Golden Boy Promotions. The boxer filed a federal lawsuit to terminate his contract, marking a major fracture between the fighter and the promoter who has guided him since his professional debut in 2016.

Ortiz’s attorney, Gregory M. Smith, argues because Golden Boy’s exclusive distribution deal with DAZN has expired without a replacement in place, the promoter can no longer give Ortiz a major television platform. Golden Boy maintain that they are in renewal talks and that Ortiz remains under contract.

The lawsuit also highlights Ortiz’s frustration with the difficulties in making a Jaron Ennis fight. The filing also claims Golden Boy breached the contract by failing to provide Ortiz with multiple opponent options. Oscar De La Hoya has now hit back.

“Although Mr. De La Hoya had [a] legendary boxing career, he has a history of substance abuse and rocky relationships with other boxing promoters. In recent years, he has unprofessionally attacked his peers and other boxing luminaries on social media platforms, including weekly Instagram video rants in which he often concludes by telling various boxers and promoters to f— themselves,” lawsuit said

“We are aware of the lawsuit. Unfortunately, Vergil is getting bad advice from his lawyer and manager, who have repeatedly violated the contract. We will aggressively defend this lawsuit and enforce our rights. We are confident a judge will agree that our contract is valid and Vergil and his team are in breach,” Oscar stated

Implications

If the courts grants a judgment in his favor (similar to how Canelo was freed in 2020), Ortiz becomes the world’s most valuable free agent overnight. He would be able to negotiate a massive, multi-million dollar “Riyadh Season” deal with Turki Alalshikh for a summer 2026 fight against Jaron “Boots” Ennis. If Golden Boy successfully files for an injunction, Ortiz could be legally barred from fighting for any other promoter while the case is pending. For a fighter who has already lost years to health issues (rhabdomyolysis), another 12–18 months on the sidelines during his physical prime would be a catastrophic blow.

This is the third major star (after Canelo Alvarez and Ryan Garcia) to take De La Hoya to court. If Oscar loses this case, it sends a signal to the rest of the Golden Boy roster that all is not well. Losing Ortiz, especially while in the middle of renewing a broadcast deal, weakens Oscar’s leverage with networks like DAZN or potential new partners.
