Jake Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (54-6-1, 34 KOs) will be a spectacle for fans.
Paul is set to face Chavez Jr at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, in June. While Paul has made a name for himself as a boxer, he has also done a considerable amount of work promoting fights, especially in women’s boxing. There is no denying that this has earned him the respect of boxer-turned-promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who recently opened up about his contributions to women’s boxing while also talking about the exciting storyline in his upcoming fight.
Talking to Brown Bag Mornings, De La Hoya was all praise for Paul, revealing that he was the reason why female boxers were getting bigger purses.
“What he’s done for women’s boxing is pretty incredible. The women’s purses are a lot bigger because of him,” he said.
De La Hoya highlighted the fight between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor, revealing that they had over 60 million people watching them, which was undoubtedly a phenomenal number for women’s boxing.
He mentioned that Paul’s role in promoting women’s boxing and bringing in the crowds for women’s boxing events is truly commendable. And emphasized the importance of having a male ally in any female sport.
Meanwhile, he is also excited to witness Paul face Chavez Jr in the ring. In fact, he believes that a victory against Chavez Jr might even change Paul’s entire arc as a boxer.
“Jake Paul actually, it’s not that he has something to prove. But he can prove something here. Chavez Jr went the distance with Canelo, in Canelo’s prime. And imagine if Jake Paul, like, knocks out Chavez Jr, then what?” he said. “But then again, Chavez Jr can get redemption, for himself and for all the people that hate Jake Paul. It’s a good storyline.”
Meanwhile, Paul is looking forward to decimating his opponent in the upcoming fight. During their press conference, he promised a shock factor during his “toughest fight to date.”
“I’m gonna shock the world once again and prove how good I am, how powerful I am. This is his toughest fight to date, and I’m going to embarrass him and make him quit like he always does,” he said.
