Patrice Volny Outworks Steven Butler in Stoppage Win

Patrice Volny (19-1, 13 KOs) outworked Steven Butler (34-5-1, 28 KOs) to get a technical knockout win in their middleweight bout on Thursday night.

Both fighters went head-to-head in the opening round, attempting to dominate physically early on. In the dying seconds of the first, Volny landed a combination of punches that went unanswered until the final bell. The early rounds saw a lot of back-and-forth between the two and it was clear that this was going to be a brawl for as long as it lasts.

In the second half of round four, Volny threw a higher volume of punches with Butler barely responding to the blows, even appearing to stun him at the end. While Butler had his moments, Volny was getting the better of the exchanges and became more dominant as the fight went on.

Volny had his opponent stunned in round nine and let his hands go to the head. Butler held on, doing his best to avoid going to the canvas. As Volny was throwing his shots, the referee stepped in to halt the contest. This was met with a protest from Butler, who did appear as though he could have continued. That being said, the bout had reached a stage where Butler had little response to what Volny was doing, who had been consistently outworking him as the fight went on.

Undercard results

Osleys Iglesias (11-0, 10 KOs) won via devastating first-round knockout against Evgeny Shvedenko (16-2-1, 7 KOs). The time of stoppage for this 12-round super middleweight clash was 2:48. Iglesias landed a right hook to the head that elicited a very concerning reaction from Shvedenko, who began spasming on the canvas. Fortunately, the Russian fighter eventually got up and left the ring on his feet.

Movladdin Biyarslanov (15-0, 13 KOs) got the knockout win against Elias Haedo (14-6, 10 KOs, 1 NC). The time of stoppage for this 10-round super lightweight contest was 2:59 of round four. Haedo was hit with a left to the body and could not get up from it.

A bout between Shamil Khataev (12-0-1, 3 KOs) and Ramadan Hiseni (18-1-2, 6 KOs) ended in a majority draw. While one judge saw it 96-94 for Khataev, the other two had the 10-round middleweight clash 95-95. Hiseni appeared to have done the better work over 10 rounds and some observers, including the commentators, felt he had done just enough.

Jhon Orobio (10-0, 9 KOs) won via second-round knockout against José de León Jasso (13-5-1, 6 KOs). The time of stoppage for this eight-round super lightweight clash was 0:53. Jasso went to the canvas once in the first round and again in the second. After the second knockdown, he failed to beat the referee’s count.

Luis Santana (12-0, 6 KOs) opened the card with a second-round stoppage win against Guillermo Crocco (20-4-1, 6 KOs). The time of stoppage for this eight-round lightweight contest was 2:03. Santana sent his opponent to the canvas three times in the second before the fight came to an end.
