Ryan Garcia is teasing an imminent announcement regarding his next championship defense, stating that something is coming.
Despite nursing a minor hand injury during his 12-round masterclass against Mario Barrios to win the WBC Welterweight Title, Garcia’s medical team has reportedly cleared him for a full return to training, paving the way for a potential summer blockbuster fight.
While Garcia initially targeted a 144-pound catchweight for a clash with Shakur Stevenson, the narrative has shifted toward a legacy play. Garcia has expressed interest in dropping back to 140 pounds to challenge for Stevenson’s WBO and Ring straps, provided there is no rehydration clause—a move Shakur has publicly welcomed.
“I think [Garcia is] serious. I think he [does] want the fight. I just think that everything gotta work well in the business, everything gotta make sense. Before the [Barrios] fight, I heard them saying they’ll fight me at 144[lbs]. Then, after the fight, I’m hearing 147[lbs]. “I’m not going up to 147 no time soon. I think that will be my last weight class that I’m in. I don’t think that, at 28 years old right now, I’m just going [to go] up to 147,” Shakur said
And yet, a grudge-match sequel with Devin Haney remains the fight the public demands most. However, that path is currently blocked; Haney is deep in negotiations for a WBA/WBO unification against Rolando “Rolly” Romero targeted for May 30 at the Barclays Center. Either way, Ryan is ready for his next move.
