According to The Ring Magazine Teofimo Lopez is set to return to the ring in June or July, where he will defend his WBO and Ring Magazine super lightweight titles. Turki Alalshikh recently revealed some intriguing details about plans to stage fights in iconic venues – and according to The Ring, Lopez could be fighting in one of the world’s most iconic venues.
Lopez will return this summer in the first of a three-fight collaboration with Top Rank. An opponent is to be confirmed but the intriguing part of this report is the mention of Alcatraz Prison as the iconic venue for this fight. His Excellency seemed to confirm these plans with a post on his social media today.
Whoever the opponent may be, this is a huge opportunity for Lopez to move on to more lucrative fights. “The Takeover” has not been seen in the ring since his lacklustre but dominating win over Steve Claggett. The Brooklyn native has not produced his best since his brilliant win over Josh Taylor but this opportunity will put him back on the big stage that so clearly brings the best out of him.
The planned fight for Lopez at Alcatraz will be a headline event for Ring Magazine. His Excellency, head of Riyadh Season and chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, recently sat down with Mike Coppinger when the possibility of a fight at the iconic federal penitentiary was mentioned.
“What do you think if there is [an] event, fight in Alcatraz jail one day?,” said Alalshikh.
Teasing fight cards at other iconic events, he said: “It is like a museum now. You know, sometimes I get in my mind I want different places to do [fights]. Sometimes in mountains, maybe someday in the Pyramids in Mexico, someday in [the] Eiffel Tower in France, [The] Coliseum in Italy. You understand this concept?”
Alcatraz is an island off the coast of San Francisco. The prison closed in 1963 and later became a museum, remaining one of the city’s top attractions.
A fight card at this historic venue would be iconic, and if anyone can make it happen, it’s Turki Alalshikh.
