Terence Crawford linked with ‘fight for the ages’ return as promoter plots comeback timeline

Yet to confirm which way he is currently leaning on his boxing future, Terence Crawford certainly has all the options on the table firmly.

Improving to 42-0 last month in spectacular fashion, Terence Crawford landed a one-sided unanimous decision win over Canelo Alvarez, snatching the Mexican’s undisputed super middleweight crown.

And remaining non-committal on his fighting future ever since, Crawford has been linked with a return to welterweight, as well as a move to middleweight proper — and even a showdown with a current champion who also holds a win over Canelo.

However, as far as a standout promoter is concerned, another option for Crawford would see him tackle another unbeaten star in a “fight for the ages”.

Terence Crawford backed for lucrative Jaron Ennis clash

Seemingly tied to Canelo wherever he looks on a return to boxing, Crawford has been linked heavily with a pairing against the unbeaten WBA and The Ring welterweight champion Jaron Ennis — who actually sparred with the Mexican ahead of last month’s super fight.

And returning to the ring tonight, Ennis makes a super welterweight walk against challenger Uisma Lima, with a potential blockbuster with Crawford waiting.

To boot, as far as his promoter Eddie Hearn is concerned, a pairing with Crawford could happen as soon as next year — in a clash he’s described as a must-see showdown.

“For me, that is a fight for the ages, against (Terence) Crawford,” Hearn said of Ennis’ future during an interview with FightHubTV. “But, we have to prove ourselves — look, Terence is only going to fight ‘Boots’ if there’s loads of money on the line.

“Because he knows how good Ennis is, and he’s not gonna fight anymore, unless it’s for a lot of money,” Hearn explained. “…He has to earn his shot against Crawford, but that is the fight in nine to 12 months time — three fights down the line.”

Eddie Hearn reveals Terence Crawford’s rematch option

As well as a potential retirement from combat sports, Crawford has remained tight-lipped on the prospect of sharing the ring with Canelo again, after the lopsided nature of their title showdown.

As far as Hearn is concerned, to boot, a rematch for Canelo — whom he is confident retains a clause promising such — would prove fruitless due to the stylistic matchup between the two.

“I’m sure there’s some type of wording, Canelo doesn’t enter a fight without some type of wording in terms of a rematch clause,” Hearn explained. “But he’s just not going to beat Terence Crawford, the style is all wrong for him.”
