The path from boxing to MMA is mostly one-way. While MMA stars like Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have famously crossed over to boxing for lucrative mega-fights, elite boxers have seldom made the switch into MMA. Besides the rare exceptions of James Toney and Claressa Shields, most boxers would rather make more money competing in a sport they have mastered.
Training for the threat of wrestling takedowns, jiu-jitsu submissions, and kicks requires a lifetime of training and study that even the most gifted boxer cannot easily absorb. However, a new video posted on former boxing heavyweight champion Tyson Fury's social media showed the “Gypsy King” training MMA with none other than UFC icon Nick Diaz.
In the video, Fury appears to be employing Muay Thai-style clinch tactics, utilizing double collar ties to set up elbows, knees, and low kicks, while Diaz is seen in the background wrapping his hands.
For Tyson Fury, whose career has been comprised of dramatic retirements and comebacks, his recent training post is perfectly on brand.
Diaz is no stranger to boxing himself, as he was renowned in the cage for an unorthodox, high-volume striking style. On the Joe Rogan Podcast , Andre Ward has even revealed that Nick and his brother Nate were two of his most valuable sparring partners.
Fury's promoter, Frank Warren, recently confirmed the boxer's intention to return to the ring in 2026, explicitly stating in an interview with Ariel Helwani, "He's indicated and said to me that he wants to fight... next year, he's stated to me that he wants to come back."
Warren noted that Fury's primary target is a trilogy bout with Oleksandr Usyk, the only man to defeat him professionally. His latest retirement in January 2025 came after his second loss to Usyk, but he has already declared his return.
Fury’s session with Diaz introduces a compelling "what if" scenario into the combat sports conversation, but ultimately, his roadmap back to competition remains within the boxing ring and not the cage.
The most plausible explanation for the Diaz training session is strategic cross-training for a boxing comeback. If Tyson once again faces a technician like Usyk, who employs relentless movement and angles, Fury could benefit from the unique pressure-fighting and cardio-centric approach that Diaz is known for. This mentality and training could be invaluable in preparing for another grueling 12 rounds with Usyk.
Interestingly, Usyk himself has expressed interest in an MMA fight against the notorious influencer-turned-boxer, Jake Paul. If that potential fight comes to fruition, an MMA fight between Fury and Usyk could be possible in the future.
For now, the MMA debut of the Gypsy King remains a fascinating hypothetical, a testament to his unpredictable nature, but one that is ultimately overshadowed by the alluring payday and unfinished business that awaits him in the world of boxing.
