‘We’re Training to K*ll’: Deontay Wilder Backs Up His Statement About Wanting A Body

Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) is digging a grave, quite literally. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is currently gearing up for a comeback after a yearlong hiatus, with a fight against Tyrrell Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs) on PPV.com.

Meanwhile, his controversial statement about wanting a body in his record has been a lingering memory that perpetually continues to follow him like a shadow. However, despite the backlash, it sure looks like he is showing no sign of backing down from what he said.

In conversation with Ariel Helwani on his show, Wilder was reminded of the statement from a few years prior, albeit with Helwani acknowledging that he meant it figuratively. Helwani, nevertheless, also made it a point to ask if he was still that same person or if he had changed as a fighter.

“People gotta understand the structure of the business that I’m in. This is not no sport that we play. You cannot play boxing,” Wilder responded, highlighting that he does regret saying what he said previously. “Because it is not a sport. To say that boxing is a sport is a masking agent to cover up what it is really is. This is a f*cking gladiator sport.”

Wilder stressed that boxers have to put their hearts and souls on the line, which is, according to him, another reason why many are seldom seen partaking in the sport of boxing.

Meanwhile, the backlash that Wilder faced for his controversial statement was not a light one. In fact, one could say that he almost added a nail to the coffin of his boxing career when he called for a “body on my record” while talking to Charlamagne tha God and Angela Yee on The Breakfast Club.

WBC chairman Mauricio Sulaiman called it a “serious report which cannot go unattended,” highlighting that his words were against the WBC code of ethics. Moreover, the organization’s disciplinary committee was ordered to investigate his statements.

Wilder, on the other hand, has no qualms about his words, with him even going as far as backing it up and adding to it.

“If I say something and you don’t agree with it. If I say I want to k*ll a man and all that, you’re just as guilty as me, coz you’re a*s paying to see that happen,” he said. “In boxing, we don’t play sh*t. We ain’t practicing for nothing; we’re training. We’re training to k*ll.”

“I Hope He’s Already Paid For His Grave Burial”

Wilder is in no mood of stopping his memento mori-esque statements about his opponents’ apparent futures. The former controversy aside, Wilder even paid tribute to his statement recently when he vowed to put Jarrell Miller six feet under.

“With him, it’s talk, talk, talk. But if that fight does land for him, I can’t wait for it,” he told TMZ while asked about potentially facing Miller. “I hope he’s already paid for his grave burial. I don’t play around.”
