What’s Next For Moses Itauma?

Moses Itauma stopped Mike Balogun from extending his undefeated record to 12-0 as we look at his next steps.

It was Itauma’s 10th knockout, as the 20-year-old continues his rise in heavyweight boxing. Itauma made a rapid start, as he dropped Balogun in the first round with a left hand. Balogun got up to make it out of the round, but the writing was on the wall. Itauma finished the job in the second round with more explosive shots. A right hook dropped Balogun to the canvas once again. Balogun showed massive heart to get back up. However, Itauma landed the same right hook that dropped him again. The referee then waived off the fight.

“I know everyone’s here to see the main event. I’ve just got to dust him up and do my job. It’s very disrespectful to name others before [I’ve beaten] him, gotta send him on the way home. He’s a tough cookie. After the first knockdown I thought he wasn’t getting up, I thought what? Was catching him clean, he was still trying to get up [after the second], fair play to that man. I know there were expectations on me but this was his chance at the big league,” Itauma said

Itauma’s Options

Itauma could target Martin Bakole. Bakole is a big puncher, setting the narrative for a massive fight. He made his name after giving Jared Anderson his first loss in a devastating knockout. However, Bakole has not done much since then. Joseph Parker knocked him out in a fight that Bakole took on short notice. Bakole then secured a majority draw against Efe Ajagba in a bout where some felt he had lost.

Filip Hrgovic is also another name. The Croatian has said he would be open to that while also suggesting that Itauma has to be careful about moving through the ranks too quickly. Hrgovic bounced back from his Daniel Dubois loss with a unanimous decision win against Joe Joyce, as Itauma would pose a tough test.

Equally, Dillian Whyte could throw his name into the ring. Whyte has won three in a row since his knockout loss to Tyson Fury. However, he has only boxed three times since 2022, meaning he is not the most active. Whyte will box on the Fabio Wardley vs. Fabio Wardley in June. While a fight in June is too early, Itauma vs. Whyte could present itself later down the line.
