Emanuel Navarrete and Charly Suarez made weight for their WBO Junior Lightweight Title fight this weekend.
Navarrete puts his WBO belt on the line. He is in good form, having defeated Oscar Valdez in his last bout. It was the perfect response after he came back down to 130 after having moved up to lightweight. The lightweight move failed to pay off, as he lost a decision to Denys Berinchyk, who held the WBO belt.
Suarez knows there are not too many chances available to win a title. The 36-year-old is 18-0. He secured a win against Jorge Castaneda to set up the title shot. A unification likely awaits the winner against O’Shaquie Foster or the winner of Angelo Leo vs Tomoki Kameda. Navarrete originally missed weight by hitting the scales at at 130.2 pounds. However, he eventually made the weight, giving him the right to defend his belt. Meanwhile, Suarez made weight at 129.9 pounds.
“I will do my best. I’ve dreamed of this,” Suarez
“It hurts for a day, and then it’s better the next day. He has a lot of experience … Olympians always generate a lot of difficulties. I love the Mexicans when they do great work, it’s very pleasing for me,” Navarrete said
“The last guy I would’ve picked is Suarez, because he’s a right-handed Denys Berinchyk. He’s going to chase Suarez down. Suarez switches lefty to righty. And it’s been seen already that he has problems with movers. Maybe [he chose Suarez] because he’s the least of the punchers. Navarrete is a real strong guy, and I expect him to assert that,” Brad Goodman (Top Rank matchmaker)
