In what was a great heavyweight battle as Agit Kabayel (26-0, 18 KOs) scored a sixth-round TKO over Zhilei Zhang (27-3-1, 22 KOs) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which has instantly elevated his status within the division.
Kabayel is now a major player and the interim WBC heavyweight champion, which will give him a shot at Oleksandr Usyk if the unified champion decides to give him an opportunity.
In the opening round, Zhang came out more aggressive than he had in previous fights. He utilized his right hook as Kabayel moved to his left. Kabayel did land some big overhand rights, which buzzed Zhang for a few seconds, but then Zhang returned with a straight left hand. Zhang hurt Kabayel a few times throughout the round.
Zhang and Kabayel went back and forth throughout the second round, but it appeared that Kabayel was getting the best out of the exchanges. Zhang would land some clean right uppercuts and follow them with a straight left, but it was towards the end of the round.
Kabayel’s work rate was the highlight of the third round as he kept working on Zhang’s body and making the 41-year-old work harder than he wanted to. Also, Kabayek had Zhang on the back foot. In the fourth round, Kabayel hurt Zhang with a right uppercut and followed it with more body shots. Zhang began to take deep breaths and appeared hurt. Kabayel was having his way throughout the round.
After losing most of the early rounds, Zhang landed a hard left hook, sending Kabayel down to the canvas. Kabayel got up and fought his way until the sound of the bell but Zhnag had already gained back the momentum at this point. In the sixth round, Kabayel landed a left hook to the body sending Zhang down to one knee. Zhang could not get up to beat the ten-count giving Kabayel the victory.
